Redhawk Athletics Fall Review

The Fall Sports season has now officially concluded at Westwood and our Fall Sports teams had many accomplishments in our second year of existence. We fielded our first ever Girls Golf team at Westwood and they were led by Coach Mike Dobreski. Mike did a great job of teaching the rules of the game as well as golf etiquette to our girls. The girls learned a lot and even won two matches in their inaugural season. The team was comprised of mainly underclassmen and we look forward to watching them improve over the years to come.

This was also our inaugural year for our Girls Cross Country team. Freshmen Emma Howe and Eighth grader Madison Hancock consistently finished 1-2 throughout the season for the Girls team. For our Boys Cross Country team, Ereck Lewis broke numerous records this season and Senior Kelvin Rosemond helped lead the team as the boys finished as Region Runners-up, missing the Region Championship by 3 points. The boys went on to compete in the 3A State Championship finishing 9th overall, as Ereck finished 16th overall missing All-State honors by one place. The Boys will look to continue that success next year moving up to Region IV 4A. Both teams were coached by Brice Mann who was in his second season as the Redhawk Head Coach.

Ramona Gonzales coached our Girls Tennis team to its first ever victory this year as they defeated Lower Richland and they nearly found themselves winning three other matches but came up short. This was a tremendous improvement for the Girls Tennis team and they look to keep improving each year under the guidance of Coach Gonzales. Leading the team in Singles wins for the second straight year was Eighth Grader Caroline Stewart.

Despite many injuries, the Redhawk Volleyball team overcame those issues to qualify for the 3A State playoffs for the second straight season. Unfortunately, their season ended in the first round of the state playoffs to top seed Chapman. The good news is we have a lot of talented ladies returning and they should be hungry to advance further next year. Jordan Jones was named to the 3A All-State Volleyball team and will return next year with talented players Jamila Minor, Kelsee Keese, and Jasmyne English.

The Football team’s “Revenge Tour” got off to a tough start against the #1 2A team in the state Fairfield Central, but after that the Redhawks were able to make big improvements from their first year. The Redhawks beat two District Two teams (RNE and Ridge View), and then after losing their first region game to eventual champion Chapin, the Redhawks went on a 5 game win streak which included its first ever playoff win vs. Woodruff. Last week, the season came to an end as I witnessed one of the best high school football games I have ever seen. We ended up losing to Greer 42-45 on a last second field goal. The players and coaches have nothing to be ashamed of as they made all of “Redhawk Nation” proud with their efforts this season.

Despite losing this game, I witnessed in just a short amount of time how the school has really come together in showing its school spirit. We had two busloads of students and parents follow the team to Greer to cheer on the Redhawks in the pouring down rain. Not to mention the other hundreds of fans and community that made the two hour drive in the rain to cheer on the Redhawks. I want to thank all of you who made the trip and showed that REDHAWK PRIDE!

WE ARE WESTWOOD!!!
