Hour of Code at WHS

Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. Basic programming activities
help nurture creativity and problem solving skills. By starting early, students will have a foundation
for success in any future career path.

Computer programming jobs are growing 3 times faster than students entering the field. Yet fewer
schools teach computer science than 10 years ago. 90% of K-12 schools in the United States
don’t even teach it. Westwood High School believes in the value of computer science education and is part of the 10% that does offer courses in computer science.

In conjunction with Computer Science Education Week, Westwood High School will be participating in Hour of Code activities on Monday, December 9, 2013.

The Hour of Code is a self-guided activity for students of all ages that requires no previous experience. Online tutorials feature lectures from Mark Zuckerberg and Bill Gates, and
artwork from popular games Angry Birds and Plants vs. Zombies. The Hour of Code is designed in an effort to demystify code, and change the conversation around computer science.

So students and teachers, charge your Chromebooks over the weekend and be ready to experience the excitement and satisfaction that comes with making a computer come to life through the magic of coding. Parents, feel free to join us on Monday so you too can experience the Hour of Code. Our activities will begin at approximately 10:30 AM.

Computer Science Education Week is celebrated each year in conjunction with the birthday of Rear Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, a pioneer of modern computing.
