Athletic Review December 19th-January 10th

Wrestling: After hosting the school’s first ever tournament and finishing fourth out of 10 teams, our Redhawk Wrestling team has been very busy preparing for region meets by participating in tournaments at Rock Hill and at Dreher. Last week our Redhawks lost a heartbreaking match to Chapin 39-38 and then competed very strongly at the Dreher
Invitational this past weekend. Westwood finished in 6th place from a field of 30 teams at the Dreher Blue Devil Invitational. The tournament was filled with teams from SC and NC.  We had one champion in the 120 pound weight class.  Evan Carrigan went undefeated with all pins and one technical fall.  He now carries a record of 34-1.  Everyone contributed points to the team.  Marlin Grant, Kelvin Williams, Sam Flores and Kijuan Smith all wrestled into the semi-finals, one round prior to placing. This week our grapplers host AC Flora and River Bluff for a key region match-up on Wednesday. Matches start at 6:00pm. Come out and cheer our wrestler’s to victory
Girls Basketball: The Lady Redhawks competed in the Charleston Carolina Classic over Christmas Break and came home as champions of the Battery Division Bracket. The Girls defeated North Myrtle Beach in the Championship game 46-40. The Lady Redhawks have stuggled since losing a close bout to RNE in their first game of the year and last week dropped games to Ridge View, Blythewood, and Camden. The girls are looking to get over the hump and compete for all four quarters as they take on perennial power Lower Richland Tuesday and AC Flora Friday. Tuesday’s game is at home and begins at 6:00pm. Be There!!
Boys Basketball: Our Boys team competed in the Moody Holiday Tournament at Northwestern High during the holidays finishing in fourth place out of 12 teams. The two losses in the tournament dropped the boys from #2 in the state to #4 in 3A. Since the break the boys have compiled wins over RNE, Blythewood, Ridge View, and Camden. The Boys team is tied for 1st in the region with AC Flora and Dreher. This week is a huge week for the region in basketball and will determine who the upper level teams are in the region as the boys take on Lower Richland Tuesday, then AC Flora and Dreher on the road back to back nights (Friday and Saturday). Good luck to our Boys as they prepare for some big games this week! Go Redhawks!

GO REDHAWKS!!
